Nexus 7 2013 Analysis Series- The Processor

This is going to be a series of posts analyzing the Nexus 7 2 hardware components and features. We will be disassembling the Nexus 7 2 piece by piece, part by part, inch by inch and have a look into what that makes it "the next thing" .

Google has been very meticulous and dedicated in providing the users with state-of-art products and services for the past seventeen years from the day of its inception. Taking every data carefully of the multiple feed-backs and reviews from users, Google has been researching over improving the products/services they provide to the users with high quality and performance at free of cost or at much cheap rates.

The Nexus 7 2 in comparison with its successors is expected to showcase the power of technology with the help of Asus and the Android development community.

In this post we will be looking into the processor of the Nexus 7 2 and will decide whether Google has made the right choice by choosing the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 for their next Nexus 7 tablet.

Snapdragon 600

The Snapdragon 600  was announced along with the Snapdragon 200, 400 and 800 chips in the series at the beginning of 2013.

The Snapdragon 600 can be called as an equivalent to the Snapdragon S4 Pro. Even though there are a couple of differences in both of them. A comparison between the two on the CPUBoss gives more points to the Snapdragon 600. Both are almost same in speed and performance except for their clocking and browsing speeds. Plus the Snapdragon 600 is a newer release compared to the Pro.

Here is a note from Qualcomm describing the quadruplets.

Each of them seems to be the best chips for the device categories it was designed for and the most important factor regarding the four is the Battery life. So here is our First reason why Google made the choice for Snapdragon 600. After the Jelly Bean 4.2 update the Nexus 7 has been facing a lot of criticisms regarding the battery drainage and the performance. Snapdragon can optimise the power utilization with the performance using Assymetrical Multi processing (aSMP) and has a 40% faster battery charging. It seems like Google has solved the power issue. Thanks to the new Snapdragon 600, there is going to be easier life for tablet users.

Google has been providing high clarity displays in their Nexus devices compared to similar Apple and Samsung phones or tablets. The pixel density of the earlier Nexus 7 was 216 ppi (pixels-per-inch), its around 53 pixels more per inch compared to the Apple I-Pad mini. Displaying high clarity, crystal clear and crisp images and videos has risen to the next level with the help of Snapdragon 600 supports up-to 2048 x 1536 HD display (equivalent to I-Pad 3 with Retina display) . The Second reason is the display clarity which the Snapdragon 600 can provide which gives life to images, video with high resolution even on external devices connected to it.

The processor used in the Nexus 7  was a NVIDIA Tegra 3 Quad-core processor which was clocked up-to 1.6 GHz. While the Snapdragon 600 Quad-core processor will be coming with a clocking speed of 1.9 GHz per core, which makes a big difference in the performance of the device.

NVIDIA Tegra 3 housed the ULP Geforce while the Snapdragon 600 has a built-in Adreno 320 which is far better than the Geforce . This can be the Third reason why the Next Nexus 7 is going to be an AWESOME ! device. Hard-core gamer's will be pleased to see the rendering and lighting with super flow precision being implemented in the games. Now PC games will be available without much trade-off on tablets.

The Fourth reason will be the support of camera up-to 21 MP on the Snapdragon 600. From the earlier post we came to know that the Nexus 7 2 will be having a back camera of 5MP. Well, the Snapdragon 600 seems to provide camera input ports for cameras upto 21MP, so that was a nice call.

The Last but not the least reason, will be the jump of Connectivity from 3G to LTE connectivity. The LG Optimus G Pro and Samsung Galaxy S4 which are having the Snapdragon 600 are two awesome smartphones with LTE support. Advent of 4G networks and wide-spread use of Hi-speed mobile internet has mad Google to go forward with providing LTE connectivity to the next Nexus 7 and Snapdragon 600 supports that too.

Lets round-up all the reasons:

1. Better battery life
2.Supports High quality HD display
3. Best of the breed Adreno 320 GPU for tablet-gaming.
4. Support for cameras upto 21MP
5. LTE supported.

and clocking speeds of 1.9GHz with Hexagon DSP for ultra-low power operation for a variety of applications like music playback, enhanced audio effects, computer vision processing and still and video image enhancements and IZAT location technology features GNSS for accurate auto and pedestrian navigation and Indoor Location capabilities for advanced location-based services.

The above listed reasons will be enough for answering "Why Nexus 7 2 is having a Snapdragon 600 ?"
